Congratulations to surprise Nobel Peace Prize winners, the European Union, who were honoured for their work in stabilising Europe, and their contribution to democracy. While there are debates to be had about the level of power the EU has, and Britain’s relationship with it, its democractic achievements are clear.
Among other things, there’s the Charter of Fundamental Rights, a document enshrining basic citizens’ rights, a more democratic election process for MEPs than British elections, and providing an example for countries to improve their democracy in order to join the EU.
All in all, the EU has done rather a lot for democracy, but is it appropriate for the institution to win a Nobel Peace Prize? What do you think?
