GOVERNMENT DEFEATS LAST-DITCH ATTEMPT TO FIX THE LOBBYING BILL
““This is a huge blow - the “gagging bill” charities and campaign groups have opposed from the very beginning will now become law. Though the government were forced to offer some concessions, the restrictions which will cause the biggest problems for campaigners are now sure to pass. The passage of the Lobbying Bill will weaken public debate and silence critical voices when they are most needed - in the run-up to an election. It strikes at the very core of our democracy.
The government said it wanted to create transparency, but it has let professional lobbyists off the hook, while loading campaigners with a dead weight of regulation. We are left with a Lobbying Bill which does nothing about lobbying, but forces campaigners to jump through bureaucratic hoops if they want to save their local hospital.””
