Restore the independence of the Electoral Commission

Our elections watchdog was stripped of its independence by the Elections Act 2022. It left the Commission hamstrung as an independent referee in our elections - vulnerable to whoever is in power.

The people that the Electoral Commission might have to investigate, now get to set its strategy and policies!

Let's restore the elections' watchdog’s independence before the next General Election.

Register every voter

Up to 8 million eligible voters in the UK are not on the electoral register, leaving them voiceless in our political system. 

Young people, renters, and ethnic minorities are the groups most likely not to be registered to vote.

We are calling for Automatic Voter Registration, which would ensure everyone eligible is able to vote. Read our report 'Register Every Voter.'

Overseas constituencies

All UK citizens living abroad can now vote, but they will find their voices muted by a weak system of representation in Westminster.

UK citizens living abroad should be represented by MPs whose bread and butter is dealing with the challenges UK citizens face living abroad.

We need overseas constituencies so that these citizens can be properly represented in Westminster.

Scrap Voter ID

Over 750,000 people could not vote in the last General Election due to the new requirement for photo ID.

The Electoral Commission’s report revealed that people from more deprived social backgrounds were more likely to be stopped from voting by photo ID.

The Voter ID scheme is unnecessary, costly, and discriminatory. The Government must scrap it altogether.

Think tank transparency

Think tanks are able to exert considerable political influence in the UK through their regular contact with senior decision makers

But for some think tanks, it is impossible to find who their big donors are and what their commercial interests are.

We're calling for legislation requiring think tanks to reveal their funding and register as lobbyists if they receive over £90,000 from a single source.
