Ethical Fundraising policy

It is Unlock Democracy’s policy to uphold at least the same standards of transparency as laid out in the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act (PPERA) or successor legislation with regards to donations.

Unlock Democracy will declare the source of national donations that in monetary terms, or in kind, are valued over £5,000 including donations in the same financial year from the same source that cumulatively add up to more than £5,000 (PPERA specifies £7,500).

It is Unlock Democracy’s policy to seek funds from a wide range of sources and to accept funding from any donor, whether monetary or in kind, provided that acceptance does not:

  • impair Unlock Democracy’s independence to pursue its mission

  • endanger its integrity, brand or reputation

  • negatively impact on the work of Unlock Democracy

  • is inimical to the organisation’s objectives or its agreed policies

  • would lead to a demonstrable net decline in the assets of the Unlock Democracy

  • consists of goods, property, or services, which Unlock Democracy cannot lawfully use, convert, sell or exchange, in direct support of its aims

The refusal or acceptance of donations on a day to day basis is the responsibility of the Membership and Database Officer. Where there is some ambiguity as to whether a donation can be accepted, the decision is referred to the Director. The Director may choose to refer any problematic donations to the Management Board. The Management Board has ultimate responsibility for accepting or declining donations.
