Get involved: Day of Action for Fair Votes

A flourishing democracy requires votes that count equally, which is why Unlock Democracy has long supported replacing first-past-the-post with proportional representation in UK elections.

Proportional systems, or systems with elements of proportionality, are already in place in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK’s majoritarian voting system produces governments that aren’t representative of how people voted. Vote For Policies recently crunched the data on 1.9 million responses they received to their pre-2019 general election survey. They found that on average, we prefer policies from 3.42 different political parties. Just 1.9% of users choose policies from a single party.

On Saturday 22 August our friends Make Votes Matter (@MakeVotesMatter) will be holding a socially distanced Day of Action to demand fair votes. Supporters of Make Votes Matter across the UK will join together to highlight the ever-increasing need for Proportional Representation in general elections.

If you want to get involved in the day of action and show that we’re still demanding equal votes, you can find out more information and sign up here: www.makevotesmatter.org.uk/day-of-action/aug-2020
