LAUNCH: Labour for a New Democracy

Unlock Democracy is proud to be part of the new joint project, Labour for a New Democracy, which aims to get the Labour Party behind proportional representation by the next party conference, in 2021.

As a collaboratoin between Unlock Democracy and eight other Labour and democracy organisations, this is the start of what we hope will be a decisive push to change party policy on the voting system.

Commenting on the project, Unlock Democracy’s Chair Jessica Metheringham said:

“The way in which we vote is such a crucial part of our democratic system, and moving towards PR is an essential foundation for building a better democracy. Our aim is a codified constitution, one which puts fair votes at the heart of a fair democratic system.”

Launch event on Monday 21 September

10:00 AM • Monday 21 September, 2020 • Register here

Join us for the official launch - featuring former New Zealand PM Helen Clark, plus Clive Lewis, Debbie Abrahams, Alex Sobel & Tessa Milligan - and find out how you can get involved.

In 1996, New Zealand built a new democracy: replacing its First Past the Post system with a form of PR. Today, Jacinda Ardern is leading one of the most effective and popular progressive governments in the western world. Helen Clark, Labour Prime Minister from 1999 to 2008, will share her thoughts on the impact electoral reform has had on New Zealand's politics.

Then we'll hear from our panel of UK Labour speakers on creating a new democracy in the UK, beginning with a commitment to electoral reform. Speakers include:

  • Clive Lewis MP

  • Debbie Abrahams MP

  • Alex Sobel MP

  • Tessa Milligan, Open Labour

This event is open to all Labour Party members. Click here to sign up. If you can't make it, sign up anyway to receive a video recording and next steps.
