Democratise to Decarbonise
The campaign
Successive UK governments have failed to act decisively on the climate crisis, despite overwhelming public support for action. Our outdated electoral system means that our voices on climate can be ignored.
To kickstart action on climate change, we must fix our flawed political system that allows those in power to ignore the people.
We started this campaign because world leaders were discussing plans to tackle the climate crisis at COP26 in Glasgow. Our aim was to use the publicity around COP26 to make the case for changing our electoral system.
What did we deliver?
We gathered thousands of signatures for our joint petition with Compass, Electoral Reform Society, Make Votes Matter, and the Sortition Foundation.
We took part in the climate demonstrations on the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice. Our supporters turned up with our banners and placards to the rallies in London and Glasgow to make the case for proportional representation. It was great to see our supporters take part in our first in-person demonstration post-lockdown.
What’s next?
Fighting for proportional representation will continue to be a big part of our work at Unlock Democracy. We will keep making the argument that fixing our unresponsive political system is the key to solving many of our problems, including climate change.
