Fix our broken politics

The campaign

The UK’s political system is broken. In our annual survey, 79% of our supporters said that politics is working ‘very poorly’ in the UK.

We need to fix this by building a modern democracy which is vibrant, inclusive, and puts power in the hands of the people.

This change should be led by the people. That’s why we want an independent, open, inclusive Citizens’ Convention to lead the overhaul of our democracy.

In this campaign, our aim was to get party leaders to back a Citizens’ Convention that will recommend necessary democratic reforms.

What did we deliver?

During this campaign we built important connections with other organisations in the democracy sector. We got 17 organisations and academics to back our campaign for a Citizens’ Convention.

We got thousands of signatures on our joint petition calling for a Citizens’ Convention, and we used this petition to recruit new supporters for Unlock Democracy.

We wrote to all the UK party leaders and the Green Party to get their support for this initiative. We received positive responses from the leaders of the Liberal Democrats and Renew, and an expression of interest from the Women’s Equality Party.

It was great to engage with political parties that can see the value in holding a Citizens’ Convention to improve our democracy.

What’s next?

Going forward, we will be working alongside the like-minded organisations that we built connections with throughout this campaign.

We will continue persuading political parties to back democratic reforms and a Citizens’ Convention or Assembly as part of our Powering Up campaign.
