Prime Minister's Office
10 Downing Street

27th June 2025

Dear Prime Minister,

You will no doubt have seen the results of the latest British Social Attitudes survey.

It shows that the public's trust in our politics has hit a record low. Only 12% of people trust governments to put the interests of the nation ahead of their own party 'just about always' or 'most of the time'.

This is a dangerous territory to be in and without serious reforms we risk people losing faith in democracy altogether.

The same survey shows a clear demand for change. A record 60% of people are now in favour of changing the electoral system ‘to allow smaller parties to get a fairer share of MPs’. This change is backed by a majority of supporters from every major party, including 55% of Labour supporters.

Introducing a fairer, more proportional voting system would start the process of restoring trust and confidence in our political system.

Please tell us how you will stop trust in politics from collapsing further on your watch?

Yours sincerely,

Tom Brake
