Our Council
What does the Council do?
We are a democratic organisation at our heart. Our Council is responsible for setting Unlock Democracy’s overall strategy, meaning members can steer the direction of the organisation.
Our Council governs Unlock Democracy and our campaign. Members elected to our Council:
Meet three or four times each year to take important decisions on questions of strategy, budget, staffing policy, and forward planning
The Council also selects seven of its members to act as a Management Board, which oversees the day-to-day management of Unlock Democracy
As representatives of our members, the Council plays a really important role in ensuring that we are a democratic and accountable organisation. We want you to take the step of standing for council and contributing your knowledge and experience to build a stronger, more powerful campaign.
Who is on the Council?
Our Council is the main governing body of Unlock Democracy, and it is important that it represent the whole membership. It works best when it includes a variety of perspectives and backgrounds, both personal and political.
Council has up to 18 members who serve for two years.
Our elections process is designed to promote diversity in gender, ethnicity, and regional background:
At least a third of Council members must be women and a third of Council members men
Two Council spaces are reserved for Black and Minority Ethnic candidates
Why should I stand for the Council?
We are at our strongest when we bring together the skills and experiences of people from a variety of perspectives.
Perhaps you have skills, knowledge, or experience that would enhance the Council, or your personal or professional background has given you the ability to inform our work. Perhaps you are ready to help us face the changes that lie ahead?
If you think this sounds at all like you, we encourage you to stand this time around.
Regardless, we want you to make your voice heard by voting for Unlock Democracy’s next Council.
The next Council elections will be in 2026.
