Luke Williams
ABOUT ME:
My name is Luke, and I have had the privilege of serving on the Council for the past six years. I'm from Widnes in the North West, and work as a Customs Officer in the manufacturing sector.
I have long been passionate about democratic reform. Furthermore, I am a member of the Labour Party, enjoy a number of hobbies, and in the May local elections was elected as a local Councillor.
My time on Council:
It's been fantastic to be on the Council for the last six years. While there is still progress to be made with democratic reform, I know that we've had some fantastic results in the democracy sector that our campaigning and organisation have contributed towards.
Over the last two years in particular I have had the honour of serving as Co-Chair of UD alongside Jessica Metheringham. I've also been on the Management Board, and am involved in the Co-Ordinating Committee of the UD Merseyside and West Cheshire Group.
The best thing about UD is always the people: including our fantastic Council Member, talented Staff Team, and dedicated Membership. A personal highlight for me over the last two years was Co-Chairing our last AGM and seeing so many new and familar faces in person.
My Beliefs:
We now find ourselves in unusual times, in which politics are incredibly divided. But it's my belief that democratic reform can bring people together. Non-Partisan groups like UD are more important than ever, and we can unite people of all political stripes. Ultimately, we can't fix issues in the country if we don't fix issues in our political system. Democratic reform is vital, and a better political settlement will mean more effective Governance, better protection of rights and more prosperity. I especially want to support us in campaigning on a new voting system, house of lords reform, and decentralisation of power.
If re-elected:
If re-elected to the Council, I will continue to support our staff team and give them the tools they need for success. A priority for the next Council needs to be ensuring that we invest our funds sensibly and are financially secure into the future.
Additionally, I will also endeavour to host a member event, maintain good attendance at meetings, take on extra responsibilities where needed, and support/assist with our collaboration with other like-minded groups.
