Luke Williams

ABOUT ME:

I am a 23 Year old that works in the world of Customs and Excise. Alongside being active with Unlock Democracy, I am a member of the Labour Party and Fabian Society. This said, I am convinced that constitutional reform should be done in a non-partisan way and that everyone can be a winner.

What I believe:

I'm a true believer in positive constitutional reform. I believe that the best way to build a better country is to build a better political system. With this in mind, I am fully behind the values of Unlock Democracy. We need a written constitution that includes;

  • A reworked House of Lords

  • A brand new voting system

  • A separation of powers between the branches of Government.

  • Enshrined protection of rights and

  • liberties

  • Decentralisation of Political Power - More Local Control over decisions and policy.

Additionally, I also personally support:

  • The Three Legs of Direct Democracy - The Recall, the Initiative and the Veto

  • Referendum.

  • Term Limits on Executive Offices like Mayoral Positions

  • A Constitutional Court system to uphold a new constitution

My time on Council

It has been a great honour to be on the Council for the last four years. Throughout my time on the Council, I have been involved in a number of exciting projects and initiatives. These have included:

  • Supporting the work to update the UD strategy

  • Sitting on interview panels for staff members

  • Serving on Council working groups to action policy motions from our AGM

  • Co-Hosting a members discussion event, Serving on the Unlock Democracy

  • Management Board

  • Joining the Co-Ordinating Committee of the UD Merseyside and West Cheshire Group

If re-elected

If re-elected to the Council, I would continue to support the work of the staff team and do whatever I can to ensure they have an environment where they can truly thrive. Equally, I would hope to continue high attendance at meetings, and seek to take on extra responsibilities where required on Council.

I would also hope to push for the expansion of the UD blog page, support greater collaboration with other like minded groups, look at ways to harness new social media platforms, and seek to host another all members discussion.
