Democracy Day Motion

For information only. This motion will not be debated at the AGM.

Michael Capek put forward the following motion.

This AGM notes that:

  • Democracy globally is under attack. In this country there is a possible outcome of being faced with a Donald Trump style government.

  • Not enough is being done to promote democracy and its benefits.

  • The recent International Democracy Day on 15 September 2025 was underwhelming and a missed opportunity.

This AGM resolves that:

  • The officers of Unlock Democracy with or without the officers of other pro-democracy organisations should write to the prime minister requesting that for next year's International Democracy Day, or on a newly created National Democracy Day the leaders of all the main political parties should come together and annunciate what each sees as the benefits of democracy and what they will be doing to promote the Democratic institutions of this country.

Statement in favour:

Opposition to something must start and end with the proposal or counter-proposal. We cannot oppose something with nothing. If we focus on what we are against, that something that we are against may materialise. This motion is trying to emphasise democracy,  put it into the front of the population’s minds and encourage people to think and understand why it is so successful as a system of government.

While not part of this motion, suggested dates for a National Democracy Day are one of the Spring Bank Holidays so that people can celebrate away from work, or November 12th, the day after Remembrance Day.

Following a conversation with the Director, it was agreed that Unlock Democracy would take the following action, ‘with or without the officers of other pro-democracy organisations should write to the prime minister requesting that for next year's International Democracy Day, or on a newly created National Democracy Day the leaders of all the main political parties should come together and annunciate what each sees as the benefits of democracy and what they will be doing to promote the democratic institutions of this country.

This motion will not therefore be debated at the AGM.
