The fight of our lives

The Conservatives have won a huge majority on a minority of the vote. Johnson now has the power to reshape our political system to suit him and the interests he represents.

This campaign was dominated by billionaire donors, and saw unprecedented levels of misinformation - online and directly from politicians mouths. We don’t know who is responsible for each of these, but here’s just a snapshot:

Yesterday, the Yorkshire Post published a scathing editorial demanding:

“The people of this country must never again be asked to navigate a maelstrom of misinformation in order to decide who will govern them.”

The political establishment have treated us with contempt. Instead of encouraging mass participation, powerful actors have tried to manipulate us in any way possible to secure the outcome they wanted.

Johnson’s central campaign promises were based on untruths. 88% of Conservative ads are misleading. We know from decades of speeches and writing that Johnson is an elitist, not a democrat. Our constitution of gentlemen’s agreements will not hold this government back.

What happens next?

The billionaires are now firmly in control of government. Everything that the rest of us value is now on the table.

Johnson will have the power to sign an NHS-wrecking Trump trade deal without a vote in Parliament. We know from the Conservative manifesto that the government has the Human Rights Act in their crosshairs. We can be sure the promised Commission to ‘review constitutional arrangements’ will be dominated by elite interests who want to reduce checks on their power even further.

It’s time to fight

We, the British public, have never had a say in setting the basic rules of government. Now is the time to build a movement capable of taking on the powerful, and forcing them to let the people design a new political system, underpinned by a new constitution.

We’ve got to make sure that time is up for governments doing whatever they want to us on a minority vote, without basic, unbreakable, protections for our rights or for the NHS and other cherished institutions.

It’s time to act. Winning an election is not a blank cheque and the need for democracy doesn’t stop once the votes are counted.

Here’s what you can do right now:
