Our letter to the Bill Committee

Dear Committee Members for the Representation of the People Bill,

Thank you for taking the time to scrutinise the Representation of the People Bill.

The Bill is an opportunity to restore trust in our political system. But it will not achieve this if we don’t get big money out of our politics.

Big money donations have a corrosive impact on trust. Polling has consistently shown that people believe that big money donors have more impact on policy than ordinary voters. 

While the Bill does contain measures to try to address money from foreign sources, unlimited donations from UK sources will still be allowed.

An annual donation cap on what individuals and companies can give is the only effective solution to this problem. It is critical to any effort to try to restore trust in our politics.

Please will you raise the idea of a donation cap during the Committee sessions for the Bill? And please will you propose or support amendments to establish a donation cap?
