Restore the independence of the Electoral Commission

The last Government ended the Electoral Commission's independence by giving the government control over the Commission's strategy and policy.

A strong and independent elections' watchdog is VITAL to stopping authoritarian leaders from ripping up democratic norms.

Fortunately, the Government announced in March 2026 that it will restore the independence of the Electoral Commission in the Representation of the People Bill.

We've been fighting for this since 2021, when the last government stripped our elections’ watchdog of its independence.

We NEED an independent referee to guarantee fair elections - and soon we will have one again!

    Our briefing for MPs

An independent Electoral Commission is critical for ensuring the integrity and fairness of the democratic process.

Restoring independence would reaffirm the UK's commitment to fair elections and protect its democratic institutions from undue influence.
