Rt Hon Nick Thomas-Symonds MP
Cabinet Office
20th June 2025
Dear Rt Hon Nick Thomas-Symonds MP,
Almost a year into this Parliament, there is still no sign of the public consultation on House of Lords reform, which was promised in Labour’s election manifesto.
Three months ago, you confirmed that details of the consultation would be coming “in due course.”
Reforming the House of Lords is important to the 85,000 supporters of Unlock Democracy who want to see a fairer, more representative democracy for the UK.
Our concern is that if the consultation does not start soon, there won’t be enough time in this parliament for the public to give their feedback and for potential changes to be made.
Please can you confirm whether the government is still planning to hold this consultation, and if so, when we can expect it to be launched?
Yours sincerely,
Tom Brake - Director of Unlock Democracy
