Our letter to the Minister

Dear Secretary of State,

Thank you for setting in place the Rycroft Review into foreign interference and for the Government’s swift action to implement two of its key recommendations.

We hope you will commit to fully implementing Rycroft’s other recommendations in the coming weeks. But as you know, Rycroft was only looking at foreign interference in our politics.

It is not just foreign money in our politics which is a problem, big money from UK sources is also damaging.

Latest polling shows that 92% support a cap on political donations.

Any effort to restore trust in our politics is doomed if we don’t get the influence of big money out of our politics once and for all.

That’s why we are urging you to amend the Representation of the People Bill to introduce a cap on all political donations, not just on overseas voters’ donations.

This bill which already includes several landmark reforms such as Votes at 16, the modernisation of voter registration and now a moratorium on crypto-donations is a big step in the right direction.

But with the inclusion of a donations cap, it could be a transformational bill for our democracy.

Yours sincerely,
Tom Brake
