Our letter to the Constitution Minister

Dear Minister,

Authoritarian governments are gaining power and rolling back democracy worldwide.

The UK is particularly vulnerable to this risk due to our lack of a written constitution, and our flawed voting system that can give governments overwhelming power without broad public support. 

Our new report, Democracy on the Brink, produced by the 99% Organisation, Unlock Democracy, Open Britain and others, sets out the scale of the threat we face and the practical steps your government can take to address it.

In response to this report, we urge you to:

  • Request a rapid risk assessment to verify that the report’s analysis is correct and fully understood by policy-makers

  • Build political consensus amongst the UK’s political parties to create a united front for action

  • Set up a senior cross-disciplinary team to refine the report’s recommended actions and plan their implementation

  • Define and implement tougher controls on dark money, set up independent commissions on voting and on media regulation

  • Develop and implement a powerful communications strategy to highlight the risks associated with “Project 2029”
