Our letter to the new Democracy Minister

Dear Florence Eshalomi MP,

Congratulations on your appointment as Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

We look forward to working with you to strengthen the Representation of the People Bill and make it truly transformative for our democracy.

We hope you will meet with us to discuss how the Bill can go further. These are just three of the changes that could make a big difference:

  • Introduce an annual cap on political donations. No one should be able to use staggering sums of money to buy influence in our politics.

  • Establish a National Commission on Electoral Reform. It should bring together citizens and experts to recommend a voting system fit for the future.

  • Commit to a timeline for Automatic Voter Registration. Every eligible voter should be registered to vote in time for the next General Election.

Bills on electoral reform do not come round often. This is a big opportunity to strengthen our democracy for generations to come.

We would welcome the chance to work with you to make the Bill as ambitious and effective as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Brake
