Councillor survey on Local Government Reorganisation
In September we emailed Councillors across England to ask for their views on Local Government Reorganisation and the Government's plans for devolution.
Thank you to the Councillors who responded to our survey. We greatly appreciate it.
We got responses from 815 Councillors from all political parties, including independent Councillors.
The results highlight several areas of concern amongst councillors from across the political spectrum:
Councillors are not confident that the Government’s proposed devolution arrangements will lead to better outcomes for residents.
A majority of Councillors in local government reform areas believe 500,000 residents is not the right size for new local authorities.
Councillors are strongly opposed to centrally imposed local government reform and want to see greater involvement of local authorities and residents.
These results have been sent to Rt Hon Steve Reed MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
